Emiel (F27) is a young female golden eagle who was given her name by landowner Adrian in memory of his eldest son who sadly passed away after battling Burkitt Lymphoma, an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma.

Initially housed in an aviary with Paradise (L11), Emiel was moved to her own enclosure after demonstrating a lack of tolerance towards her aviary partner.

Accessing this particular eyrie for collection was very challenging and involved a complex abseil into a crag nest which was undertaken by climbers Lewis Pate and Justin Grant. A huge thank you to both gentlemen for their skill and determination.

Emiel was collected from an Estate near Loch Ericht in the highlands where Logan Steele of Tayside and Fife Raptor study Group monitors the pair.

Raptor worker Logan Steele said:

"We were delighted to facilitate the donation of Emiel to the project. Over the years this site has proven to be very productive and has regularly produced twins and this year, 2024, the female is again incubating in the same eyrie, so we have our fingers crossed for another successful breeding attempt. Many thanks are due to the gamekeeper, Nick Stewart, for his on-going help and co-operation."

Landowner Adrian Van Well said:

“This is the name of our eldest son, who unfortunately passed away on the 6th of January 2022 of an uncurable cancer, Burkitt Lymphoma, a most aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.”

Project Manager Cat Barlow added:

"We are very honoured to name the eagle Emiel in memory of Adrian's son and thank him for the beautiful name and all of his support."
